Mumbai:Date 05-Dec-2018.Mumbai Congress President Sanjay Nirupam today wrote a hard-hitting letter to Governor Shri. Vidyasagar Rao stating that the Maharashtra Electricity Regulatory Commission (MERC) and Adani Electricity Mumbai Limited (AEML) are working hand-in-glove in order to loot the people of Mumbai.
Calling the on-going argument between MERC and AEML ‘Bogus’ Sanjay Nirupam said, “MERC and AEML are colluding to hoodwink the general public by issuing misleading statements from time to time. Being the regulatory body, it is the duty of the MERC to regulate the power sector in Maharashtra, create healthy competition in the power sector, to rationalise or revise the power tariff as and where necessary, and finally, to protect the interests of power consumers in the State of Maharashtra. However, instead of doing its job, the MERC has always been promoting the interest of the power distribution companies. In the latest case, MERC has increased the power tariff in Suburban Mumbai to benefit AEML in a big way, which has consequently resulted in a huge financial burden on the ordinary consumers in the city”.
Exposing the blatant lies of the AEML Sanjay Nirupam further stated in the letter, “When Mumbaikars raised their voices against the increasing power tariffs, AEML stated that it is a case of increase in consumption which later turned out to be a white lie. AEML could not have charged the consumers a bill amounting to 3 months’ usage which they have claimed in their defence, since it cannot result in a steep increase like 50% to 100%. Yesterday, MERC nailed another lie by sending a notice to AEML stating that they had allowed only a marginal hike”.
The Mumbai Congress Chief further requested the Governor to instruct MERC to send a notice to Adani to straightaway reduce the tariff and refund the excess amount billed to the customers for the months of September, October and November.
Adani Electricity Mumbai Limited (AEML) took over the power distribution in Suburban Mumbai from Reliance Energy in the month of August 2018 and that MERC enforced the tariff hike from the month of September 2018. AEML later claimed that Reliance Energy had applied for a tariff revision in the month of December 2017, which prompted MERC to take the decision. MERC has issued a suo moto notice yesterday to AEML regarding the hike and has demanded a reply within 24 hours.
